The NVZ Digital Care program stimulates and supports hospitals in realizing the ambition to offer more digital care and thus reduce the number of outpatient visits by a quarter. The Digital Care Monitor is part of this. This is made available via a closed online environment of Dutch Hospital Data (DHD). The access rights are assigned in each hospital by the local administrator.

The monitor is based on data from the National Register of Hospital Care (LBZ). The development was commissioned by the Digital Care Program and was carried out by DHD. Hospitals can see within the monitor which part of the consultations are already conducted digitally and how their performance in that area compares to that of other hospitals.

The comparison can be made with all NVZ hospitals, but also specifically with general or top clinical hospitals. It is also possible to break down the share of digital consultations. This can be, for example, according to the type of consultation, such as video calling or telemonitoring, but also by diagnosis group or specialism.

As already mentioned, the monitor is only accessible to NVZ members. However, the NVZ Digital Care Program also publishes a public fact sheet (pdf) three times a year. It contains the same data, on an aggregated level. The fact sheet shows, among other things, what the share of digital care is in outpatient consultations and what percentages of hospitals offer video calling and telemonitoring.
Ambition almost realized

For example, the most recent version of the public fact sheet shows that in the first quarter of this year 95 percent of hospitals offered some form of video calling. Last year, during the corona crisis, that percentage was even higher at 99 percent, but compared to 2019 it is still almost double.

Looking at the percentage of digital consultations, 31.6 percent in Q1 of this year, it becomes clear that the ambition of 25 percent fewer physical outpatient visits has already been exceeded. The ambition of at least 25 percent digital outpatient care is already being achieved at 86 percent of hospitals. The crux, according to the NVZ, will be to hold on to this even after ‘corona’.
